9/11 inside job : upload

So, you’ve downloaded the chorus or the full tune, and wondering what to do. The tabs on this page will guide you.
How do I prepare my file?
Your audio file should be an mp3, an unprotected Windows Media Audio file (wma) or a (small) .wav containing one or more takes of you talking / singing / rapping / chanting / whispering the chorus line. Harmonies are especially welcome. If you’re not sure how to do it, try one of the guides.
Files should be acapella (no music in the background). If you have access to a studio this will be easy. We would prefer files to be 128kbps (“CD quality”) mp3 or higher and less than 400Kb in size but we can often work miracles :-)
Here is a suggested route for recording your voice over the chorus if you are using Windoze:
- Plug in your headset :-)
- Run “Sound Recorder”, usally found in Start :: All Programs :: Accessories :: Entertainment :: Sound Recorder
- Download and play The chorus
- Press Record in Sound Recorder, sing along for 1 or 2 lines into your headset mic
- Press Stop in Sound Recorder and stop playback of the music too
- Press Play in Sound Recorder to listen to your acapella voice recording
- If you’re happy with it, File :: Save it on your hard drive then consult the upload page to find how to send it to us, along with your name and web site in the message
- If you’re not happy with your recording, use File :: New to start again in Sound Recorder (discard the unsaved file), play the downloaded chorus and go back to step 4. Sounds obvious, but to minimise breath noises try altering the position of the headset stalk; up, down or away from your mouth a little (especially if you’re shouting the line!)
Alternatively, if you just have a microphone into your computer and no headset, transfer the chorus file to your mp3 player/iPod, play it back from there in your earphones and record your voice from step 4 above in Sound Recorder.
Here’s a suggested route for you to record your chorus line if you are running a flavour of UNIX or Linux. Thanks to Bernhard Rosenkränzer for the guide (it’s for Ark Linux, but it’ll be similar in other distros).
- Plug in your headset :-)
- Download The chorus
- Run "Recording Tool (KRec)" (in K -> Multimedia)
- Make sure the microphone volume/level is set correctly in the KRec window
- Click the "new" icon in the toolbar
- Leave the defaults as is in the dialog that follows, press OK
- Play the chorus using e.g. amarok; at the same time, click the record button in KRec, chant / sing / rap / whisper the chorus.
- Press the Stop button in KRec
- Click the "Export" button in the toolbar (the one left of the "close" button), save the file (choose a filename that ends with .mp3 to make sure it is saved in mp3 format)
Alternatively, if you just have a microphone into your computer and no headset, transfer the chorus file to your mp3 player/iPod, play it back from there in your earphones and record your voice as above.
If your file is quite large (over 1Mb) and you want to make an mp3 there are quite a few free programs out there that will convert your .wav. Try Googling for audio converters or download one of these:
Send your completed acapella (essential), you name or pseudonym (essential), website or blog link (optional) by e-mail to:

If you have your own server or web space, you can even upload it there and send us the link so we can download it from you.
When you send us your name or pseudonym, we will include you on the 9/11 Wall. If you add your web site or blog URL, we’ll link to you so other people can read what you have to say on your own site. Free advertising, eh? Can’t be bad.
